FROM FOR TO WITH

Is it possible to be deeply involved in ministry and still be far from God? The answer, according to Scripture, is yes. Drawing from the book of Nehemiah and the words of Jesus in Matthew 7, this message explores one of the most important and often overlooked warnings in the Bible: your work for God can never replace your walk with God. Nehemiah led one of the most remarkable rebuilding efforts in history, completing Jerusalem's walls in just 52 days. Even Israel's enemies had to acknowledge that God was behind it. But the real story was never about the wall. God was not only rebuilding something around His people. He wanted to build something in them. And yet, not long after making solemn commitments to follow God faithfully, the people drifted. The wall stood. Their hearts had wandered. Jesus warns in Matthew 7:22-23 that many will come to Him pointing to prophecy, miracles, and ministry done in His name, only to hear the words, I never knew you. These are some of the most sobering words in all of Scripture. They are not a rejection of obedience. They are a call to examine whether our obedience is rooted in genuine relationship or in religious performance. Ephesians 2:8-10 gives us the right order. We are saved by grace through faith. Good works grow out of that salvation. They do not produce it. When we lose sight of this, ministry can quietly become a place where we try to outwork our shame, using service and busyness to compensate for what only forgiveness can fix. Sin cannot be outworked. It has to be confessed and forgiven. This message is for anyone who has ever felt like they were doing all the right things but still felt distant from God. It is for the person who serves faithfully but wonders if their relationship with Jesus is built on grace or on performance. It is for anyone ready to stop working for God's approval and start walking in the love He has already given. Topics covered include the story of Nehemiah and the rebuilding of Jerusalem, the warning of Matthew 7 and what it means to truly know Jesus, the difference between working for God and walking with God, how shame and moral compensation can drive us into ministry for the wrong reasons, the gospel of grace found in Ephesians 2, and practical steps to deepen your relationship with Christ this week.
