01/19/2025 Saddle Up And Serve

Day 1 The Call to Radical Commitment

Devotional: The Pony Express once advertised: 'Help wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18. Must be expert riders willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.' This bold call for total commitment mirrors Jesus's invitation to discipleship. Following Jesus isn't a casual endeavor – it's an all-or-nothing proposition that requires us to step out of our comfort zones and into a life of purpose. Just as those young riders were willing to risk everything for their mission, we too are called to put everything on the line for Christ. This isn't about reckless abandonment, but rather about finding our true purpose in serving God and others. When we embrace this calling, we discover that what seemed like sacrifice actually leads to our greatest fulfillment.

Verse: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. - Matthew 16:24-25

Question: What areas of your life are you still holding back from fully surrendering to God's purpose?

Quote: Help wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18. Must be expert riders willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.

Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to follow You with my whole heart, even when it means stepping out of my comfort zone. Help me to trust that Your plans for me are better than anything I could design for myself. Amen.

Day 2. Love in Action

Devotional: Christianity isn't just about what happens within church walls – it's about actively demonstrating God's love in practical ways. When we look at Jesus's ministry, we see Him consistently moving toward those whom society pushed away. He touched the untouchable, loved the unlovable, and defended the defenseless. This same calling extends to us today. Our faith should compel us to step into uncomfortable situations, to serve those who can't repay us, and to show kindness to those who might not even thank us. True Christian service often means getting our hands dirty, literally and figuratively, as we serve others in tangible ways.
Verse: Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. - Luke 10:41-42

Question: How can you practically demonstrate God's love to someone who might be considered 'unlovable' in your community this week?

Quote: Christianity is a religion of concern for others. There's moments of loving the unlovable, defending the hated, cleaning up after others, caring for others, caring for others children, and even washing other people's feet.

Prayer: Father, open my eyes to see the needs around me and give me the courage to respond with Your love. Help me to serve others as Jesus did, without expectation of return. Amen.

3. The Power of Community

Devotional: In our increasingly isolated world, the church is called to be a place of genuine connection and community. The early church didn't just meet once a week – they shared their lives together. They ate together, prayed together, and supported one another through life's challenges. This model of community isn't outdated; it's exactly what our lonely world needs. When we gather in smaller groups, share meals, and create space for real relationships, we're not just following a biblical pattern – we're meeting one of humanity's deepest needs. True community requires vulnerability and commitment, but the rewards far outweigh the risks.
Verse: They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. - Acts 2:42

Question: What step can you take this week to deepen your connection with others in your church community?

Quote: Jesus didn't do church in rows, Jesus did church in circles.

Prayer: God, help me overcome my fears of vulnerability and isolation. Guide me to both seek and create meaningful Christian community. Use me to be part of the solution to loneliness. Amen.

4. Everyone Has a Part to Play

Devotional: God's design for the church involves every member contributing their unique gifts and abilities. Like a body needs all its parts to function properly, the church needs every believer actively participating to fulfill its mission. Your role might seem small or insignificant, but it's essential to the bigger picture. Whether it's greeting newcomers, teaching children, or serving behind the scenes, every act of service matters. When we withhold our gifts, the entire body suffers. But when we step up and serve, we not only bless others but also experience the joy of being part of something bigger than ourselves.
Verse: And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. - Hebrews 10:24

Question: What unique gifts or abilities has God given you that could be used to serve others in your church community?

Quote: Each one of us contributes something.

Prayer: Lord, show me how I can use my gifts to serve Your church. Help me to see that my contribution matters, no matter how small it might seem. Amen.

Day 5. The Ripple Effect of Service

Devotional: When we serve others, we create ripples that extend far beyond our immediate actions. Just imagine – if every church member committed to serving and giving, we could make an incredible impact on global issues like hunger and poverty. But it starts with individual choices and commitments. Every time we choose to serve, we're not just helping one person – we're participating in God's larger plan to transform the world. Our service, combined with others', creates a powerful force for good. While we might not see the full impact of our actions immediately, we can trust that God uses our faithful service to accomplish His purposes.
Verse: When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today. - Luke 19:5

Question: How might your commitment to serving others inspire and influence those around you, especially the next generation?

Quote: If everybody in churches in America, if everybody just said, hey, you know what? We're going to start serving and we're going to start tithing, right? Just churches in America, current attendance numbers serving and tithing. Two weeks. Two weeks we end world hunger.

Prayer: Father, help me to see the bigger picture of how my service connects to Your kingdom work. Give me perseverance when I can't see immediate results. Use my life to inspire others to serve. Amen.
