Day 1: The Need for Belonging
Devotional
Belonging is a fundamental human need. We all desire to feel accepted and valued in the spaces we occupy. Think about Buddy the Elf's journey from the North Pole to New York City. He left a place where he felt out of place to find where he truly belonged. Similarly, Jesus left heaven to come to earth, seeking to bring belonging to all of us. Reflect on your own experiences of feeling out of place. How did it feel? What did you long for in those moments? Remember, Jesus understands our need for belonging and came to fulfill it.
Bible Verse: 'But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.' - Galatians 4:4-5
Reflection Question: When have you felt out of place, and how did you find a sense of belonging?
Quote: 'Belonging is the best. Anything that you do, any place that you go, if you walk in, you want to feel like you belong there.'
Prayer: Lord, thank You for understanding my need for belonging. Help me to find my place in You and to create welcoming spaces for others. Amen.
Day 2: Jesus' Journey to Earth
Devotional
Jesus' journey to earth was a mission of love and belonging. He saw people who were harassed, helpless, and in desperate need of compassion. Just as Buddy the Elf faced rejection in New York City, Jesus faced rejection from many. Yet, He continued to reach out to those who felt out of place. Jesus belonged to Bethlehem because of His lineage, but His mission was to show that everyone belongs in God's family. Reflect on how Jesus' journey impacts your understanding of belonging.
Bible Verse: 'In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.' - Luke 2:1-3
Reflection Question: How does Jesus' journey to earth change your perspective on belonging?
Quote: 'Jesus makes this journey to Earth knowing that all of the things he sees, people that are harassed and helpless and he sees that are in desperate need of compassion is what he's seeing.'
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for coming to earth to show us that we all belong in Your family. Help me to see others through Your eyes of compassion. Amen.
Day 3: Belonging Before Believing
Devotional
Belonging often comes before believing. If we don't feel that we belong, it can be hard to believe that Jesus accepts us. Think about Zacchaeus, the tax collector. He was despised by many, yet Jesus accepted him and invited him into a relationship. This act of acceptance transformed Zacchaeus' life. We are called to create communities where people feel they belong, regardless of their background. This sense of belonging can lead them to believe in Jesus' love and acceptance.
Bible Verse:'While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.' - Luke 2:6-7
Reflection Question: How can you create a sense of belonging for someone who feels out of place?
Quote: 'Belonging comes before believing. So if you don't feel that you belong here, you're going to have a very hard time believing that Jesus accepts you as well.'
Prayer: Lord, help me to create a welcoming environment where others can feel they belong and come to know Your love. Amen.
Day 4: We Are All Brothers and Sisters
Devotional
As believers and followers of Jesus, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. Our sense of belonging is not based on where we come from but on our shared faith. Jesus' acceptance of everyone, regardless of their background, teaches us that we all belong to the same family. This week, challenge yourself to see others as your brothers and sisters in Christ. How can you support and love them as Jesus does?
Bible Verse: 'But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.' - Micah 5:2
Reflection Question: How can you show love and support to your brothers and sisters in Christ this week?
Quote: 'We are brothers and sisters of Jesus. That's what we are.'
Prayer: Father, thank You for making us brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to love and support others as You have loved and supported me. Amen.
Day 5: Coming Together to Do God's Work
Devotional
Belonging is about coming together as a community to do the work God has placed before us. Just as Buddy the Elf found his place and purpose in New York City, we find our purpose in the community of believers. We are not meant to do it all on our own. By running the huddle together, we can go out and accomplish the work God has given us. Reflect on how you can contribute to your community and support others in their journey.
Bible Verse: 'Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.' - Galatians 4:6-7
Reflection Question: How can you contribute to your community and support others in their journey?
Quote: 'Belonging is about us coming together, running the huddle, so that way we can go out and do the work that's been placed before us.'
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the community of believers. Help me to contribute and support others as we do Your work together. Amen.
